Elixir of Freedom: St. Joseph’s College celebrates 79th Independence Day
Freedom is never dear at any price. It is the breath of life,” declared Mahatma Gandhi, encapsulating the spirit that ignited the vibrant Independence Day celebration in St. Joseph's College on 15th August 2025. With hearts brimming with patriotism and pride, the event unfolded under the adept guidance of Master of Ceremony, Shayaan Zaman, whose charisma ensured a seamless and spirited programme. The following report outlines the draft schedule of this memorable occasion:
Group Captain Anurag Anand, the Chief Guest was escorted to the dais with due respect. The Principal Rev. Fr. Walter D'silva introduced the Chief Guest. Group Captain Anurag Anand was commissioned in the IAF on 19th December 1992 at Airforce Academy Hyderabad. Over the course of 32 years of dedicated service to the nation, he has served with distinction in all parts of India. For his exemplary service, he has been honoured with the Chief of Air Staff Commendation and the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief Commendation twice.
He was presented with a sapling as a token of appreciation, setting a warm tone for the event. The formal proceedings began with a Bible reading and prayer led by Mrs. J. Cutting, fostering a moment of reflection. This was followed by the hoisting of the National Flag, a solemn moment accompanied by the singing of the National Anthem, filling the audience with pride.
The Pipping Ceremony was held with great pride and solemnity, marking an important milestone in the journey of our young leaders. The event was graced by our esteemed Chief Guest, Group Captain Anurag Anand, and our respected Principal, Rev. Fr Walter D'Silva, who jointly honoured the cadets for their achievements. During the ceremony, the following boys were formally invested with their ranks and responsibilities:

The March Past, executed with precision, showcased the discipline and unity of the students. The Principal Rev. Fr Walter D'Silva delivered a heartfelt welcome speech, highlighting the significance of Independence Day. He emphasised the efforts and sacrifices made by the soldiers who are ever vigilant and instrumental in safeguarding the borders and ensuring every citizen breathes in free air. He also dwelt upon the need to be aware of their incredible efforts in making our country prosper. The mood lightened with a soulful solo song performed by the winner of a recent competition, Sarthak Tripathi, captivating the audience.
He began by appreciating the collective spirit of the institution, remarking that such an event spoke volumes about the school’s culture and commitment to excellence. The ceremony also evoked patriotic pride as everyone joined in singing the National Anthem, recalling the sacrifices and struggles of our nation’s past.
Highlighting the resilience shown by India’s leaders during the freedom struggle, he reminded the students that though the past was difficult, the future held immense possibilities. He assured them that the school would prepare them to face challenges with courage and to emerge with flying colours.
Speaking about military service, Gp Capt Anand described it not merely as a profession, but as a call to serve the nation — one that demands honesty, respect for others, and a deep sense of responsibility. Addressing the students as the future of the nation, he quoted, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country,” urging them to choose a path that would make India proud.
Then, the fancy dress boys arrayed themselves on the stage taking the form of some of the most illustrious freedom warriors our nation had witnessed.
The Junior College Captain’s speech on India’s 79th Independence Day at St. Joseph’s College celebrated the freedom achieved on 15th August 1947 through the efforts of countless leaders. It encouraged students to honour this legacy with responsibility, unity, and respect, pledging to maintain cleanliness, study diligently, and uphold justice. The address concluded with gratitude to guests and staff, ending with “Jai Hind!”
A vibrant group dance by Primary section students added a colourful and joyful element to the programme. A poignant poem recitation by Yashasvi Kumar Singh, a student of class 3, touched the hearts of all present, showcasing the innocence and patriotism of young minds.
The Middle School students presented a thought-provoking tableau, depicting India’s unbeaten diversity and its beautiful symphony that permeates its unity, our plethora of complex and ancient languages, the thousands of cultures that all rest peacefully in our country.
The College Captain, Arish Abraham, said, “We honour the vision of our visionary leaders by recognising that freedom means shaping the future through responsible choices. By making the right decisions today, we contribute to building a better tomorrow.”
The Chief Guest’s address was the highlight, offering insights into the importance of freedom, unity, and the role of youth in nation-building.
The first segment of Independence Day celebrations was concluded with a vote of thanks by the College Head Marshall.
The Principal, Rev. Fr. Walter D’Silva, announced the much-awaited results of the March Past competition. Green House secured the first position, followed by Red House in second place, Blue House in third, and Yellow House in fourth. The results of the Bulletin Board Decoration competition were also declared. In the Junior Section, Gold House claimed the first position, with Green House second, Red House third, and Blue House fourth. In the Senior Section, Red House emerged victorious, with Gold House in second place, Blue House in third, and Blue House in fourth. The Principal congratulated all the participants for their enthusiasm, creativity and team spirit.
On the same day, following the Independence Day celebrations, the Late Shri Omkar Nath Khanna “Jhaboji” Memorial Annual Football Tournament was held, organised by his sons, Shobhit Khanna and Amit Khanna. The match was played between the Old Boys Association (O.B.A.), captained by Mr. Piyush Tandon, and the St. Joseph’s College Staff, led by Mr. Manoj Singh. Engaging commentary by Dr. Vishnu Deb and Tyrone Albert added to the excitement. O.B.A. triumphed over the Staff team with a 3–1 victory. For the Staff, the opening goal was scored by Mr. Ankur Arora, while for O.B.A., the first goal was netted by Mr. Vishal Puri and the remaining two by Mr. Amit Singh, who was also named Best Player of the Match.
