`The Grand Convocation of Excellence: Ceremonial Synthesis of Sport and Scholarship at the 41st Post-Centenary Athletic Display, Day 2
“Excellence is not a skill. It is an attitude.” — Ralph Marston
Following a foundational day of preliminary contests and institutional preparation, the focus shifted to the formal acknowledgement of academic and athletic excellence. This final day of the event was carefully structured to integrate the highest standards of physical display and competitive finality.
The day's formal proceedings commenced with the arrival of the chief dignitaries, pre-eminently Chief Guest, Mr. Himanshu Kumar, IAS, and the President of the occasion, Most Rev. Dr. Louis Mascarenhas, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Allahabad. Their reception by the Principal, Rev. Fr. Walter D’Silva, and other senior administrative staff underscored the significance of the event on both civic and institutional calendars. The dignitaries were then led to the College Prayer Room for the ceremonial invocation. This sacred element of the programme was highlighted by the Bishop presiding over the Opening Prayer and the symbolic Lighting of the Torch, thereby formally consecrating the event and setting a reverent tone for the activities to follow.
The disciplined entourage subsequently escorted the dignitaries to the main dais. This grand procession consisted of the College Cabinet members, the N.C.C. Pilots, the official College Band, and the uniformed House Captains, establishing a tradition of order and high ceremony. The ceremonial escort visually attested to the superior organisational rigour underpinning the entire schedule.
The ceremonial introductions followed, beginning with the Chief Guest, Mr. Himanshu Kumar, IAS, presented by Mrs. Lim Terry. Mr. Kumar’s academic trajectory includes an All-India 15th rank in the Class XII Indian School Certificate Examination, complemented by the prestigious National Talent Search Scholarship awardee and a degree in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, a Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) in Finance and Marketing from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. Mr. Kumar's distinguished IAS tenure encompasses executive command as Collector/District Magistrate in four districts. His strategic service in the State Secretariat included managing critical portfolios like Finance, Mining, and Rural Development, alongside roles in the Chief Minister's and Chief Secretary's offices. He successfully headed major revenue departments, including State Excise and Commercial Taxes, demonstrating a versatile and high-level administrative profile.
Thereafter, the President of the occasion, Most Rev. Dr. Louis Mascarenhas, was introduced by Mrs. S. Lyall. The Bishop's background reflects his humility in authority, notably his previous tenure as College Principal and his dedicated social contributions. These include institutional connection and profound work concerning child labourers, flood victims, and rural women's empowerment. The subsequent cultural opening ceremony, themed ‘Confluence’ and performed by the students of Class 8, served as a vibrant and thoughtful artistic depiction of the College’s historical journey and its central role in moulding future professionals.
The programme culminated with the synchronised March Past, duly acknowledged by the Chief Guest taking the official salute. This was immediately followed by the hoisting of the College Flag, accompanied by the entire school body uniting to sing the College Anthem, a moment that reinforced institutional identity and collective pride. The Athletics Captain, Adduaye Yadav, then stepped forward to administer the Oath-taking Ceremony, binding all participants to the highest tenets of sportsmanship and fair competition. The sporting agenda was then officially pronounced by the Chief Guest, declaring the Athletic Meet open to thunderous applause.
The 100-metre sprint set the events in motion for the day. The intensity of the track competition was balanced by an initial cultural presentation from the Kindergarten Section, titled ‘Jungle Jamboree’ .The prize distribution to the winners of the initial 100-metre races and the Slow Cycle Races (O Division) encouraged all to put in their best for the upcoming events. The sequence of awards continued with the presentation of the Debi Prasad De Memorial Scholarship, acknowledging exceptional academic potential. The next event was the challenging 100-metre hurdle race for the O and A divisions, showcasing technical skill and precision. The prestigious Fr. Rego Award waspresented to the ICSE topper of 2025 of the College, Aditya Jaiswal, College Vice Head Prefect by the Batch of 1974 to recognise his outstanding achievement.
Following the recognition of his merit, the KG Section captivated the audience with a second thematic performance, ‘Aqua Adventure,’ demonstrating the depth of creativity in the Physical Education curriculum. The programme transitioned forward with the highly anticipated 200-metre race across all divisions, demanding both explosive power and sustained endurance from the competitors. The subsequent award ceremony celebrated these athletic achievements, including the presentation of the Nishith Dixit Award to the champion swimmers, namely Stavya Agarwal, the College Vice Captain and . A special moment of recognition followed as the Chief Guest presented the esteemed Achyut & Ashok Award, reserved for the school's most accomplished All-rounder, Stavya Agarwal, present College Vice- Captain being this year’s deserving contender.
The next phase of the programme featured a vibrant display by Class 6 students, titled 'Chasing Rainbows, Finding Joy,' which served to promote themes of optimism and resilience. The 'Giggle Dash’ for the LKG students and the 'Balloon Buster’ for the UKG students, both light-hearted races, highlighted the inclusive nature of the Meet. The serious competition resumed with the Inter-house 4 x 100 Metre Relay Race for the O Division, a contest that demanded flawless teamwork and precision baton exchanges. Further recognising academic prowess, the Lufti Ali-Rushdi Ali Award was presented to the topper of the ISC-2025 examinations, Prakhar Kanoujia, underscoring the parity between scholastic and athletic ideals within the College. The OBA Race, a traditional fixture, saw enthusiastic participation from all present alumni, cementing the bond between past and present generations of Josephites.
As the event neared its conclusion, further individual and collective achievements were acknowledged through the prize distribution for the hurdle race and the Individual Championships across all divisions. A dramatic test of speed and controlled effort ensued as the Fast Cycle Race (O Division) took the attention of all. Another significant alumni contribution, the fitment of air conditioners in the teaching staff rooms. This love for their alma mater was appreciated with the presentation of an Award by the Batch of 1972, bestowed by the Chief Guest. Class 7 then presented a powerful display, ‘The Warrior’s Gauntlet’. The formal addresses then commenced with the College President, Most Rev. Dr. Louis Mascarenhas congratulated the entire college community, emphasizing that sports and teamwork instill essential life skills like discipline, resilience, and leadership beyond academics. He concluded by highlighting that the ultimate goal of education is character building—encompassing love, forgiveness, and brotherhood—and encouraged all students, especially those facing examinations, to maintain discipline and strive for success through effort and active participation.
The competitiveness among peers reached its climax with two showcases of collective strength and coordination: the Inter-house Pyramids, a visually spectacular demonstration of physical teamwork and balance, and the Inter-house Tug-O-War Finals, a brutal contest of will and strength that determined the final house supremacy.
The Annual Sports Day at St. Joseph’s College has become a focal point of public discourse, attributable to the stupendous organisational efforts of the senior-most Physical Training Instructor, Mr. Mohd. Shabi Rafiq, and his dedicated team, namely Lt. Azhar Usmani, Mr. Danny Ekka, Mr. Zaheer Abbas, Mr. Shubham Chandra, Ms. Poonam Singh, Mr. Harshit Gladwin, Mr. Utkarsh Sharma, Mrs. Pratibha Shukla, Mrs. Sudha Gupta, Mrs. Shabbo, Mr. Yashwant Singh, Mr. Joel George, and Mr. Asad Iqbal.
The best teacher awardees as given by the Inder Mohan Sethi Trust were Mrs Sabah Khan and Mrs. Charu Walia from the Junior section and the Senior section respectively, who received the awards as an acknowledgement for their three decades’ long service to the premier institution. The entire College then reformed for the Final March Past for the Closing Ceremony. The Chief Guest, Mr. Himanshu Kumar, IAS, delivered his concluding address, reflecting on the exceptional discipline displayed and offering motivation to the students, drawing upon his own experience of balancing academic and professional excellence, succeeded by the Final Prize Distribution, including the highly anticipated declaration of the Overall Championship, presented jointly by the President and the Chief Guest. The College Captain offered a comprehensive Vote of Thanks, acknowledging all contributors to the successful organisation of the event. The ceremony concluded with the singing of the National Anthem, followed by the formal and solemn Beating the Retreat, which officially marked the closure of the 40th Annual Athletic Meet.

It should be noted that this generous gift was presented by the Silver Jubilee Batch of 1999, showing their never-dying love towards the College.
Thevenerated Guests were then escorted by the College Cabinet, the N.C.C. Pilots, the College Band and the various House Captains to the dais. Mr. Anish Dayal Singh IPS was then formally introduced by Dr. Mrs. Linda Gaffney and was florally welcomed by the Principal.

He is best known for his incredible efforts at ameliorating the plight of child labourers, flood victims, besides empowering rural women to become self-sufficient.
The grand opening ceremony by the students of Class 8 on the theme, ‘Igniting Young Minds Since 1884’, shed light on the journey of St. Joseph’s College, Prayagraj since its foundation in 1884. Just as a train ferries passengers and drops them off at various stations, similarly the school treats all students equally, letting them acquire multiple skills which help them shine in their chosen careers.
Following this, the March Past commenced, with the Chief Guests, Mr. A. D. Singh IPS and the Bishop, Most Rev. Louis Mascarenhas taking the salute. Subsequently, the esteemed Chief Guest hoisted the College flag, along with the singing of the College Anthem by the entire school. The Athletics Captain, Mayank Singh, then took the Athletics Oath on behalf of every student. The Athletics Torch, symbolising the spirit of sportsmanship, was thereafter passed from Kartikeya Anand, the Athletics Vice Captain, to Mayank Singh, the Athletics Captain, who in turn handed it over to the other National level athletes who have carried the name of our college to glory, namely, Amber Vishal and Athrava Srivastava.
The Chief Guest declared the Athletic Meet 2024 officially Open.
The first race,100-meter race for all divisions paved way for a vibrant P.T. Display by the students of class 3, centred around the theme, ‘Glittery Glitz’. The audience was all smiles as the youngest performers grooved to disco beats and spread cheer.
Shortly thereafter, the winners of the 100-meter race were presented with their medals followed by the Debi Prasad De Memorial Scholarship bagged by Mohd. Shawaiz Zaki.
The ‘Harvesting Dreams’ themed P.T. display by the students of class 4 dwelt on the outstanding efforts of the farmers and their contribution to the nation.
The 100-meter hurdle race, a fast-paced race full of action, was then conducted for the students of O and A divisions, followed by the presentation of the Fr. Rego Award by the Batch of 1974 to Kavya Kushwaha for scoring 98.60% in the ICSE examinations. Such is the admiration that Late Rev. Fr. Rego inspires in his former students that even after half a century, the present-day students get inspired by the aura of one of the most illustrious Headmasters of the school.
The subsequent P.T. display of the students of class 5 on the theme ‘Una Celebracion Mexicano,’ which translates to, ‘A Mexican Celebration,’ was a fiesta of joy and happiness, depicting the diverse and rich culture of Mexico.
The 200-meter race saw athletes from all divisions displaying their speed and endurance as they exploded through the curved track to the finish line, causing the crowd to erupt into cheers.
Prizes were given out to the winners of the 200 metres race as well as to the champion swimmers Yatharth Sinha and Stavya Agarwal who were adorned with the Nishith Dixit Award. Mayank Singh from the 'O' Division broke the previous record in the 200-meters race, setting a record of 23.35 seconds. Similarly, Altmas Kabir from the 'F' Division also broke the 200-meter race record setting 37.23 seconds as the new record.
The Inter-House 4 x 100-meter relay race took place next, for the students of the 'O' division.
It requires tremendous drive and focus to ace both studies and extra-curricular activities. The Best All-rounder for the session was Yuvraj Gupta successfully bagging the Achyut Ashok Award along with a cash prize of 35 thousand rupees. The next event which was the P.T. display by the students of class 6, on the theme, ‘Save Earth Save Life,’ gave a powerful message that reducing plastic will go a long way in saving Earth.
Academics is the bedrock of a student’s life hence the Lutfi Ali-Rushdi Ali Award given to the topper of ISC examinations holds a special significance. This year’s awardee was Aditya Upadhayay. Fast Cycle race is yet another spectacle for the audience, as the students of the 'O' division really did put the pedal to the metal, racing round the track with sheer willpower and stamina. It is to be noted that this is the last time the Fast Cycle Race was held in the Annual Athletic Meet.
Subsequently, medals were distributed to the winners of the 100-meter hurdle and the fast cycle races.
Recognition of one’s efforts is of paramount importance hence the 1972 Batch felicitated Kavya Kushwaha, the ICSE topper of the Academic Session 2023-24. The audience was in for a thought-provoking and utterly engrossing spectacle as students of class 7 performed on the theme ‘Panch Koshiya Kaya Kalp,’ or ‘Five-celled Rejuvenation,’ demonstrating different yoga asanas and their myriad benefits.
The OBA races are a living proof of the love and the attachment that former Josephites have for their school. As a result, the OBA races always see enthusiastic participation from almost all the previous batches of students. Amping up the excitement further was the severe contest for physical and supremacy as displayed in the nail-biting tug-o-war. A battle of nerves, it saw both the Gold and the Blue Houses ceding not an inch as they pulled like one man.
In his address to the audience the Bishop congratulated everyone for organising this grand event and said that all the teachers deserve praise for guiding these youth in the right way. He said that we all are witnesses to the College’s progress in all aspects. He concluded by saying, the main slogan of this prestigious institution is, “Quality of education leads to all round development of the personality.”
As a token of appreciation and gratitude, he was presented a memento by the Principal. In a majestic display of perfect teamwork, the College lined up for the final march past. Awards were given to the Athletes and Fr. Cyril Award for Best Teachers was given to Mrs. Meena Vincent along with the Best Teacher Award sponsored by the Stellar Sethi Memorial Trust given to Mr. N. B. Lawrence.
Post which the Chief Guest addressed the gathering. In his speech, Mr. Anish Dayal Singh, congratulated for the success of the programme. He especially appreciated the disciplined march past and the Bands performance. Recalling his school days, he shared some of his special memories with everyone and concluded his speech by motivating the students to serve the country. Thereafter, a memento was presented to the Chief Guest by the Principal.
The College Captain Mohd. Sultan then gave a comprehensive Vote of Thanks. He acknowledged the contributions of each and every person involved in the mega-event.
The Chief guest then declared the meet 'Closed'. The singing of the National Anthem and the Beating of the Retreat declared the Annual Meet 2024 officially closed.

Ode to G20 : SJC celebrates Post Centenary 139th Annual Athletic Meet & P.T. Display
“One man practising sportsmanship is far better than a hundred teaching it.”
- -Knute Rockne
Sports Day is a vibrant celebration of athleticism, teamwork, and unbridled enthusiasm. The air is charged with the spirit of competition as athletes showcase their prowess in a kaleidoscope of events. Beyond the competitive edge, Sports Day fosters a sense of camaraderie, where participants forge bonds that extend beyond the track. The colours of jerseys, the palpable energy, and the collective pride make Sports Day a spectacle that transcends mere athleticism – it's a celebration of human potential, unity, and the sheer joy of pushing one's limits.
Which day can be more enthralling in an academic calendar than the one dedicated to sports and games? Promoting athleticism and teamwork, St. Joseph's College, Prayagraj organised the Post Centenary 139th Annual Athletic Meet on the 18th of November, 2023, fostering in its students a sense of companionship and unity. The proceedings of this auspicious day commenced with the arrival of the esteemed Chief Guest, Bishop Most Rev. Dr. Louis Mascarenhas, and the Guests of Honour, the Golden Jubilee batch of 1973 and the Silver Jubilee batch of 1998, at the gates of the prestigious institution, St. Joseph‟s College, Prayagraj. They were warmly welcomed by the College Principal, Rev. Fr. Thomas Kumar, the College Headmaster, Rev. Fr. Melvin Pias, the Additional Administrator, Mr. A. McGowan, and the Staff Coordinator, Mr. Jyoti Dube.
To ensure the success of this grand fest, the esteemed Chief Guest, Bishop Most Rev. Dr. Louis Mascarenhas, was escorted to the serene College Prayer Room for invoking God's blessings with an Opening Prayer and the symbolic act of lighting the torch. Thereafter, Bishop Most Rev. Dr. Louis Mascarenhas was escorted to the College Gymnasium for inaugurating the new addition to the College infrastructure, the Badminton Court. It is worth noting that this Badminton Court was generously gifted by the Silver Jubilee Batch of 1998, adding to the pride and joy of the occasion and to the overall glory of St. Joseph‟s College, Prayagraj.
Subsequently, the Chief Guest, Bishop Most Rev. Dr. Louis Mascarenhas, was escorted to the dais with great honour and reverence by the College Band, College Cabinet, and Captains of the various Houses. Then, he was formally introduced by the Mistresses and the Master of Ceremony, Mrs. L. Gaffney, Mrs. Ancy Thomas and Mr. Ankur Arora respectively. Thereafter, the College Principal, Rev. Fr. Thomas Kumar, presented a floral tribute to the distinguished Chief Guest, Bishop Most Rev. Dr. Louis Mascarenhas.
The enthralling performance by the talented students of class 8 marked the opening of this Sports Day extravaganza wherein they showcased a captivating dance and tableau centered around the theme „India‟s Giant Leap Enroute Luna‟. This mesmerising presentation shed light on the momentous launch of Chandrayaan 3 by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on the 23rd of August, 2023, under the visionary guidance of the revered Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi and Mr. P. Veeramuthuvel, Project Director of Chandrayaan-3, which propelled Indian space research to new heights.
Following this, the March Past commenced with the Chief Guest, Bishop Most Rev. Dr. Louis Mascarenhas, saluting the students. Subsequently, the College flag was hoisted by the esteemed Chief Guest, accompanied by the resounding rendition of the College Anthem by the entire school. The responsibility of representing all the students of the College fell on the shoulders of the Athletics Captain, Ayush Singh, who took the Oath on their behalf. The Athletic Torch, symbolising the spirit of sportsmanship, was then passed from the Vice Captain, Mayank Singh, to the Athletics Captain, Ayush Singh, who in turn handed it over to the National Level Athletes. With the declaration of the Chief Guest, the Athletic Meet was officially inaugurated, as the Athletics Captain, Ayush Singh ignited the cauldron, marking the commencement of the event.
The first race of this auspicious day was the 100 Metre Race of all the divisions wherein the athletes competed with great stamina and vigour trying to one up each other.
A carnival is akin to a vibrant extravaganza brimming with merriment. It serves as a unifying force, building connections between individuals and fostering the creation of cherished memories. Families congregate, friends exchange radiant smiles, and an atmosphere of pure bliss envelops all. The students of class 3 orchestrated a resplendent P.T. Display centered around the theme of 'SJC Carnival'. The sight of their attires stirred immense delight within the hearts of everyone present, including their parents seated in the audience.

The 200-meter race, a thrilling sprint in track and field, epitomizes the fusion of speed and endurance. The athletes exploded from the starting point, accelerating through the curve of the track with powerful strides and precision in this race conducted for O, A B, & C Division.
Who hasn‟t heard of the legendary Father A.G. Rego, Former Principal, St. Joseph‟s College, Prayagraj? The 1974 batch continued with its tradition of awarding students securing the highest marks in ICSE examinations by felicitating Kavyam Srivastava and Priyanshu Mukherjee for topping the ICSE examinations this year with 99.2% marks.

There are hurdles to overcome in life and its various aspects, especially in sports. Subsequently, the next race conducted on the College grounds was the 100 metre hurdle race for the O & A Division.
The P.T. Display of the students of class 5 centred around the theme "PER AMORE DELLO SPORT FARE"(an Italian phrase meaning „For the love of sports-teamwork) emphasized a passion for sports and fostered team spirit. The students articulated the significance of sports in life, citing examples such as basketball, and pyramid activities. They elucidated how engagement in sports instils diligence and cultivates collaborative skills for coordinated efforts in various aspects of life.
A clear example of how team spirit leads to the entire team performing beautifully, the next event, i.e., the Inter-House relay (400 metres for the O division) had the audience watching with bated breath, the heroic efforts of all the athletes.

Superheroes are iconic figures that embody the triumph of good over evil, using their powers to protect the innocent and uphold moral values. In times of peril, superheroes rise to the occasion, showcasing resilience, bravery, and a sense of duty that inspires hope among the masses. As the programme drew to a close, the College Captain, Suryansh Pandey, proposed the Vote of Thanks, expressing gratitude to all those who worked tirelessly to make the mega event possible. The proceedings concluded with a harmonious rendition of the National Anthem, accompanied by the resounding Beating of the Retreat by the College Band, adding a majestic touch to the grandeur of the occasion.
