St. Joseph's College, Prayagraj Hosts the ASISC Fr. George Hess, SJ Memorial Zonal Inter-School Debate Competition
St. Joseph's College, Prayagraj, successfully hosted the ASISC Fr. George Hess, SJ Memorial Zonal Inter-School Debate Competition 2026, which witnessed the participation of 36 debaters from nine schools across the Allahabad Zone in the Junior and Senior categories. The competition showcased eloquence, critical thinking, and persuasive argumentation of the highest order.
The programme commenced with a prayer led by Daksh Abhishiktt Lyall, followed by a hymn by the College Choir. The proceedings were compered by the College Captain, Anosh K. John. Rev. Fr. Walter D'Silva, Principal of St. Joseph's College, welcomed the distinguished guests and extended his blessings and good wishes to the participants.
The judges, Mr. Owen Wright, distinguished educationist, former English lecturer at St. Joseph's College and Boys' High School & College, and Founder Principal of Imperial School of Excellence; Prof. Yogeshwar Tewari, Head, Department of Medieval & Modern History, University of Allahabad; and Prof. Ashish Alexander, Head, Department of English, SHUATS, and Dean, Chitamber School of Humanities and Social Sciences, were welcomed with saplings. The competition was moderated by Mr. Vinayak Tandon, Chartered Accountant and distinguished alumnus of the University of Allahabad, and Ms. A. J. D’Cruz, Senior English Teacher of the College.
In keeping with the ASISC format, the debate topics were announced on the spot, after which the participants were given one hour to prepare before presenting their arguments. The impromptu format tested their ability to think critically, organise ideas, and deliver convincing arguments within a limited time.
The competition witnessed an exceptionally high standard of debating. While the judges finalised the scores, Shreedhar Puri of Class VIII presented a captivating flute recital.

The event concluded on a note of camaraderie and intellectual enrichment, reaffirming ASISC's commitment to nurturing articulate, informed, and responsible young citizens through healthy intellectual discourse.
